Environmental criteria in public tenders: how to qualify

Environmental criteria, bonus points and supplier qualifications: what environmental evidence tenders ask for and how to have it ready.

In public tenders environmental criteria are now structural, and large private buyers follow the same direction in supplier qualifications. For those who participate, the question is not whether environmental data will be requested, but what evidence to present and how quickly.

What tenders ask for

The boundary varies, but the recurring requests are recognisable: data on the company's consumption and emissions, system certifications, environmental characteristics of the products and services offered, reduction commitments. In many public tenders the minimum environmental criteria are an access requirement, and superior performance is worth technical scoring.

The problem is speed

Tenders have strict deadlines: those who have to build the data from scratch during the submission window start at a disadvantage. The difference is made by having a permanent environmental dossier: calculated and up-to-date emissions, ESG VSME report ready, documentary evidence linked to each indicator. At that point the response to a tender is assembly, not production.

How to build the dossier once

Three components cover most of the requests: the emissions inventory with the GHG Protocol methodology, the ESG VSME report as a recognised summary document, and the reduction plan for the scores rewarding commitments. With Envify the three elements derive from the same documents and stay updated together.

Frequently asked questions

Can SMEs compete on environmental criteria?
Yes: many criteria reward documented data and credible commitments more than size. An SME with a ready dossier often beats a larger but disorganised competitor.
Is a certification needed to participate?
It depends on the tender: some require system certifications, many accept equivalent documentary evidence. The data dossier is useful in both cases.
How far in advance must I prepare relative to a tender?
The first dossier requires weeks with a manual process, days with an automated one. In any case, before the publication of the tender, not after.
