VSME. What it is, why it matters, and how SMEs can simplify ESG reporting

In recent years, sustainability has become increasingly central for small and medium-sized enterprises too. It is no longer just an ethical or reputational choice. More and more often, banks, large clients, and commercial partners are asking for structured information on environmental, social, and governance data.

In this context, VSME was born, which stands for Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for non‑listed SMEs. It is a voluntary standard developed by EFRAG with the aim of making ESG reporting more accessible, proportionate, and practical for SMEs.

Why VSME is becoming relevant for SMEs

Today, many SMEs find themselves needing to provide ESG data without having structured tools or processes in place. Demands are coming from the supply chain, credit institutions, or tenders and funding linked to the ecological transition.

The VSME therefore represents a first step toward organising sustainability information in a simple yet credible way.

Adopting an ESG reporting standard means improving transparency, facilitating dialogue with the market, and preparing for potential future regulatory changes.

How the VSME standard is structured

The standard introduces a modular approach that allows companies to start gradually. It does not require the same level of complexity as frameworks designed for large companies, but still enables the disclosure of clear and comparable data.

Documentary clarity

The standard identifies a set of essential ESG information that can be collected and communicated in an understandable way, even by organisations with limited resources.

Modularity and flexibility

SMEs can adapt the level of reporting to their size and maturity, avoiding overly complex or costly processes.

Data integrity and comparability.

Using a standardised template facilitates the comparison of information along the supply chain and enhances the credibility of the reported data.

The real problem is not the standard. It is the data collection

In practice, the main difficulty for many SMEs is not understanding what to report, but managing to retrieve the information. Data is often scattered across utility bills, invoices, Excel spreadsheets, and non-integrated systems.

This manual approach slows down ESG reporting, increases the risk of error, and makes it difficult to demonstrate the traceability of information.

Automating ESG reporting with artificial intelligence

To address these challenges, digital solutions designed specifically for SMEs are emerging. Envify, for example, is an AI-powered SaaS platform that automates the collection and structuring of ESG data.

Company documents are automatically analysed and transformed into data consistent with reporting standards.

Reduction in operational time.

Automation allows companies and consultants to drastically reduce manual tasks and focus on analysis and strategy.

Greater traceability and reliability.

Every ESG indicator is linked to the source document, improving data quality and verification capabilities.

Preparing today for the ESG demands of tomorrow

The VSME is not just a technical standard. It is a tool to help SMEs structure their data and communicate more effectively with the market.

Companies that start organising their sustainability information today will be more competitive, more credible, and better prepared for future regulatory changes.
