Climate and international agreements
Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement is an international climate treaty, adopted on 12 December 2015 and in force since 4 November 2016. It sets a shared goal to contain global warming and strengthen the ability to adapt to its effects.
How it works
The goal is to hold the global temperature increase well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) describe actions to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. The cycle runs every five years. Each new plan is meant to be more ambitious than the previous one.
