VSME in 2026: what the standard really asks of SMEs

Base module, Comprehensive module and the data that really matters: the operational reading of the European standard for SMEs.

The VSME (Voluntary Standard for non-listed SMEs) is the European reporting standard designed for non-listed companies. It is voluntary on paper, but in practice it is becoming the common language with which banks, large clients and public tenders request sustainability data from SMEs. Whoever adopts it answers once, with a solid document, instead of filling in a different questionnaire for each request.

Base module and Comprehensive module

The standard is organised in two modules. The Base module covers the essential indicators: energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, water, workforce, health and safety. The Comprehensive module adds the information that financial partners and large chain-leader companies typically request, such as reduction targets and climate risks. The practical rule: you start from the Base, you add the Comprehensive when someone asks for it.

The data that is really needed

Almost all the environmental indicators of the VSME derive from documents the company already has: electricity and gas bills, fuel invoices, waste identification forms (FIR), personnel data. The heavy work is not finding the data, it is extracting it, converting it into consistent units and linking it to the right indicators. It is exactly the step that makes sense to automate.

Why to move before the request

The pattern we see among our clients is recurring: the ESG request arrives with a deadline, often from a bank during a credit-line renewal or from a client during a supplier qualification. Whoever already has the report answers within the day. Whoever starts from scratch negotiates extensions or pays for an urgent consultancy. Preparing the ESG VSME report before it is requested turns a commercial risk into a competitive advantage.

In summary

  • The VSME is voluntary, but banks and supply chains are adopting it as a standard request format.
  • The Base module covers most of the requests; the Comprehensive is added as needed.
  • The data is already in your documents: bills, FIR, invoices, payslips.
  • Preparing it in advance costs less than chasing it with a deadline looming.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Base module enough to answer a bank?
In most cases yes. If the bank also asks for reduction targets or climate risk analysis, it is supplemented with the Comprehensive module indicators.
How often should the report be updated?
The report covers a financial year: it is updated every year with the documents of the new period. With a platform the second year requires a fraction of the time of the first.
Does the VSME also apply outside Italy?
Yes, it is a European standard published by EFRAG: it is recognised by banks and companies throughout the EU.
